There's definitely a fan base out there for this, just not the one who were most curious to hear it.

There have been some strange reunions in recent years, and on paper this new album from ex-pat Brits The Babys seems to be one of the most surprising ones. Okay, so guitarist Wally Stocker and drummer Tony Brock were half of the original line-up and went on to have successful careers playing with Rod Stewart, amongst others, but in terms of well-known names from the band's history, they lag well behind Journey's Jonathan Cain, Styx bassist Ricky Phillips, and vocalist John Waite, who of course were also three fifths of Bad English.

After some of the early reports I wasn't really looking forward to hearing this album, but after a few listens I can only assume that some were expecting a return to the pure AOR of 'Union Jacks' and 'On The Edge' when the band are obviously aiming at the Bluesy Hard Rock of the debut, 'Broken Heart', and to a lesser extent, 'Head First'.

'I'll Have Some Of That' sees the band being true to their roots, with some cool grooves, good songs and performances, and a sound that any fans of 1970s Rock should find a lot to like. Stocker and Brock are both top-notch players and they've found the perfect partners in guitarist Joey Sykes and singing bassist John Bisaha, and it's the latter that makes it work.

Bisaha has the charisma and delivery of Waite but also a slightly higher tenor voice that brings an infectious quality to everything he sings, the 'Head First' like opener 'Every Side Of You' and R&B influenced 'All I Wanna Do' immediately setting out the stall with Honky-Tonk piano, organ and female backing vocals. Elsewhere 'It's A Gas' has a great vibe, 'I See You There' is a superb Pop Rock outing and 'Sunrise And Goodbyes' is a classic Funky Rocker with a riff that evokes Led Zeppelin's 'Custard Pie'. There are no real clunkers here and every song has something to recommend it, and whilst it isn't as upbeat or stellar sounding as I'd hoped, it has the feel of a talented band doing exactly what they feel comfortable doing. There's definitely a fan base out there for this, just not the one who were most curious to hear it.
