This 'Black Widow' has a musical bite that is deadly and infectious.

Being a fan of In This Moment I was more than happy to push my review of the new album through when it arrived, even with the deadline fast approaching. 'Black Widow' is the fifth studio release and continues a trend that was started from day one... to be different. The band's Death Metal origins are by no means a defining style and I have found that each recording has been unique. 'Black Widow' is a familiar stranger to anyone who has taken an interest in the past, but I doubt it attracting many new followers.

Opener (and first single) 'Sick Like Me' is built on some crunching riffs and staccato drum patterns. The hook is not immediate but once it embeds itself it is going nowhere. 'Sex Metal Barbie' goes through a number of musical phases, deliberately challenging the listener with its sampled elements, fierce riffing and vocal pyrotechnics. There is a distinct Industrial undercurrent throughout the album and though there are still some Death/grunted vocals evident, they have been tempered considerably to make the material more accessible.

The material is dark, unrelentingly so, yet there is still enough light and shade to avoid depression overload. The unmistakable Maria Brink injects frightening emotion into every song and she acts as the lynchpin for the traumatic themes and brooding subject matter. During 'Dirty Pretty' her brutally seductive vocals are to the fore and the melody lines are generally up-tempo. If Pink ever considered a career in Metal, I suspect songs like this would be her forte. 'The Fighter' is epic in scope, both edgy and mesmerising. It is a ballad in every sense of the word but by no means generic.

In '...Widow' the writing partnership of Chris Howarth (guitar) and Brink have created a piece of work to instill interest and demand attention, one minute accusing, the next minute redemptive. The face-melting riffs of 'Big Bad Wolf' are complimented by some intense Brink histrionics and this track will be great in the live arena. Songs such as 'Sexual Hallucination' and 'Out Of Hell' allow the listener to take a breath yet they still have an intense impact and indicate that the writing is anything but one-dimensional.

In This Moment do not re-invent themselves with each release but they do manage to create something different each time without losing their identity. Had I received this album four weeks earlier, it would have topped my playlist for sure because this 'Black Widow' has a musical bite that is deadly and infectious.
