By no means a bad power metal album, but just not the masterpiece some claim it to be.

One of the more exciting new bands on the power metal circuit (at least in the beginning), Australian metallers Black Majesty impressed me a lot with their ‘Sands of Time’ debut a number of years ago. Something about their more guitar-based approach, somewhat progressive, with a cool Jag Panzer meets HammerFall vibe was what seemed to set them apart from their fellow countrymen, bands such as Dungeon and Pegazus who had more in common with the traditional schools, rather than with what was going on in Europe at the time. Over the years, Black Majesty have shed a lot of their progressive leanings for a more melodic, straight-forward sound, something that seems to have stuck, as it’s all that permeates the band’s fourth album, the much lauded ‘In Your Honour’, though unlike their previous works, I just can’t get too excited about it.

The problem with these guys lies somewhere in their production. Their albums always have a warm, almost analogue sound, something that doesn’t benefit the stylish flavour of their material. Musically, the band continues to proliferate their Iron Maiden leads and Helloween-esque melodies, but there is nothing new here from the band, nothing that grabs and excites. True, punchy opener ‘Far Beyond’ and the catchy ‘Witching Hour’ are essential additions to the band’s discography, but nothing found within the ridges surpasses the grace found on either ‘Sands Of Time’ or their blistering sophomore effort ‘Silent Company’. Truth is, the band haven’t budged an inch since their second record, and it looks like innovation is not part of their future plans. ‘In Your Honour’ is by no means a bad power metal album; it’s just not the masterpiece some claim it to be. Puts one in mind of the latest Excalion, when you think about it.
