Title

The concept of Hellyeah works better on paper than it does in the studio.

Bringing together such heavy weight musicians together as Vinnie Paul from Pantera and Chad Gray and Greg Tribbet from Mudvayne is sure to a skull crushing affair.

Echoes of Vinnie’s former band Pantera are strong in opening number ‘Cowboy Way’ and it seems things are off to a good start as the band lead an assault of furious guitar riffs.

The song titles are as uncompromising as the music and ‘Debt That All Men Play’ is a classic example. Chad Gray tears into the vocals screeching like a man possessed as the riffs just get heavier as the song progresses. Unfortunately there is little to get your teeth into, as it’s more about sheer brutality than stretching out beyond.

Despite the song title Hell of a Time’ has a sophomore taste to it and the snorting vocals cripple the songs potential to rise above the average.

Things are taken down a notch for ‘Better Man’ and it’s all the better for it as the song has a chance to breathe and stretch out into a more southern rock flavour.

By the time ‘Its On’ and ‘Cold as a Stone’ are blasting out the speakers you start to realise that the concept of HellYeah works better on paper than it does in the studio.

Most of the songs have tired and generic riffs and you cannot but help feel short changed considering the line up.

‘Stand or Walk Away’ attempts to stretch out with its staccato guitar work and it’s nice to hear Chad Gray using a more subtle vocal. Lets be honest folks there are only so many times you can use the angst ridden style of vocal to full effect before it becomes just a bit boring.

In my opinion the bands strengths will be in the arena as the personnel and style of music will find its place among the moshing hoards more favourably than a CD deck.
