A healthy mix of styles, smart lyrics, excellent performances and the ability to put a huge great grin on your face.

Megasonic are a trio of friends from Belgium, namely Dimitri Verhoeven, Jeroen De Bock and Lieven De Wolf, who have been performing in numerous bands throughout their home country for many years before uniting for this, their debut album. This is very much a studio project as all three members are multi-instrumentalists who contribute the myriad of various instruments required, although they do look like a bunch of dodgy second-hand car dealers rather than a Rock band. Yet don't let that put you off as what they've created here is a bit of a cracker.

'Sonic Tension' is an instrumental intro that is actually worthy of inclusion, unlike some of the thirty second insignificant pieces that other bands include, this is a full two and a half minutes of sweeping drama (somewhat reminiscent of Ten) that sets the scene for the rip-roaring 'Bombs Away', a Metallic-edged frantic Rocker with some amazing guitar parts, but full of melody. 'Demon's Lust' and 'Witches Brew' take the album into NWOBHM territory, the former a densely chugging Doom-laden Black Sabbath-ish number, the latter very tongue-in-cheek with a neat vocal arrangement during the chorus. 'Future Shock' then heads towards a more contemporary Metal style. 'Love Lost Love' is a bit of departure from what has gone before and the first song that truly reveals the talents of Megasonic; a Symphonic piano-driven semi-ballad with strong Progressive elements that brings to mind the mighty Dream Theater.

The second half of the album includes more straight-forward Melodic Metal numbers like 'Crash And Burn', 'Run For Cover' and 'Raging Heart' – the latter featuring an Iron Maiden style galloping rhythm, before 'Eye Of The Strom alternates between soft verses and harder choruses. 'Man In The Moon' is the album's ballad and a very classy one at that. It is also the one song which fully exposes the strength in Verhoeven's voice.

Two covers close the album, a corking run-through of Paul Gilbert's 'Down To Mexico' demonstrates the quality of Megasonic's musicianship, while Abba's 'Does Your Mother Know' is just a bit of fun that shouldn't be taken too seriously, but admittedly it is a guilty pleasure.

A healthy mix of styles, smart lyrics, excellent performances and the ability to put a huge great grin on your face, what more could you want? Sure, it goes off on the odd bonkers tangent occasionally, but that just adds to the enjoyment. A debut effort that is worthy of your attention.
