Even after spending a month with 'II', I'm barely any further than scratching the surface of what's been attempted here.

Four years in the making, this second Rock Opera instalment (of three) from Legacy Of A Tragedy describes a pact between Edgar Allan Poe and the devil, where the former has traded an endless afterlife of torment for genius and glory during his time on Earth. 'II' picks up the story as Poe enters Hell, in hope of negotiating his way out of the pact... obviously...

Now if all of that sounds hard to keep track of, factor in that every word is sung in Spanish by nineteen vocalists and you'll begin to grasp not only how ambitious the complexity of this seventy-four minute long album is, but how challenging it must have been to piece together. Factor in twenty four musicians and if you are beginning to think that the creators of all of this, Joaquin Padilla and Jacobo Garcia, are completely gaga, then I won't argue with you. Other than the fact that once you get past the sheer scale of this project and begin to allow the Operatic Symphonic Progressive Metal to get under your skin, it really is pretty damn good.

I can't pretend it's going to be for everyone. If you struggle with foreign language releases, move along, if albums which take themselves very seriously indeed ain't your cup of tea, then there's nothing here for you, if grandly gargantuan Operatic vocals and choral sections scare the bejesus out of you, then it's time for a seat and a nice cup of tea.

Still with me? Then revel in the majesty of guitar solos seldom fettered by conventional song constraints, bombastic clashings of Rock and Opera which make Therion feel conservative by comparison (although there's no actual orchestra utilized here) and vocal displays which swoop, dive, probe and stab as they cover the merest whisper to the grandest chest clearing scream.

Even after spending a month with 'II', I'm barely any further than scratching the surface of what's been attempted here. Will time reveal all? I'm really not sure... but if this sounds like your bag, then head to www.legadodeunatragedia.com, it's the only place you'll be able to take on the challenge laid down.
