Kudos for what has been created, even if it is a lot to endure in one sitting.

Before I played 'Unbreakable Hearts', I decided to do some background research about Fearless Vampire Killers as there was no bio with the release. The first thing that struck me was how much they reminded me of My Chemical Romance visually, comparisons strengthened musically after playing the album through a couple of times. The band was formed in Suffolk in 2008 and, following a succession of EPs, released their debut full-length album in 2012 entitled 'Militia Of The Lost'. It received great reviews in some of the mainstream music press and led to a headlining performance on the Red Bull Stage at Download in 2013.

The Glam/Gothic/Pop/Punk/Metal style of the music has a distinct theatrical edge and the fact FVK chronicle a fictional world called Grandomina in their music adds to the conceptual nature of the material. '...Hearts' is split into four sections ('Exile', 'Loss', 'Recovery' and 'War'), each containing four tracks. I have to admit I could not identify how the songs tied in to their respective categories, though clarification may have been possible if I had been in possession of a lyric booklet. The first four tracks have a frantic, in-your-face energy symptomatic of a great deal of the album and though the vocals stray occasionally into grunting early on, we are not talking Sepultura or Death Angel here.

The hooks are very commercial, the likes of 'Turn Your Heaven To A Tomb' and 'Exploding Heart Disorder' giving a good indication why the band are so popular with the younger crowd. 'Edge Of Eternity' marries incendiary musical passages with some Queen-like, layered, harmony vocals and these Queenisms are carried forward into the melancholy parts of 'Taste The Iron On Your Lips'; a track that carries a number of semi-operatic elements.

'...Hearts' contains sixteen proper songs (and a brief intro) and though they all run between just three and four minutes, I still feel it's a few too many. At times too many ideas are crammed into a three minute running time and because there is so much going on, it becomes quite a tiring listen if the album is to be absorbed as one full piece of work. 'In Wonderous Rage' and first single 'Neon In The Dance Halls' both contain great melodies but the constant changes in tempo and style temper the flow somewhat and diminish the appeal, though I can appreciate what is trying to be achieved.

Fearless Vampire Killers are obviously musically accomplished and have a youthful exuberance. 'Unbreakable Hearts' is bold and adventurous so Kudos for what has been created, even if it is a lot to endure in one sitting.
