Not the best live Alice Cooper show I've seen visually, but you just can't beat the music.

I always like a good Alice Cooper DVD me, and this is the first one I have seen filmed at an outdoor event or festival. This particular band line-up, in my opinion, is the best Cooper has had since the original 1970s gang, as far as the songs from that era sound when they play them; even when there are slight changes, they still sound right. This DVD contains twenty-two songs performed during his headline slot on the Black Stage at Wacken. And there are some problems.

The first thing that annoyed me was, when I put it in my player and it got past the legal mumbo jumbo, the music and graphical start, that it just cut off very abruptly, which made me think my machine was faulty. A small thing, but it was quite annoying. The first thing I noticed, as the show started, was that it appeared to be a relatively sparse stage set for a Cooper show. I have been to quite a few over the years, and there has always been much more stuff cluttering the stage. This probably also added to the fact that, as the show started before dusk, I felt that some of the atmosphere, which you always get at these shows, was lost.

Cooper's stage entrance is also quite low key. The show features a good mix of old and new material, 'Hello Hurray', 'House Of Fire', 'Under My Wheels', 'I'll Bite Your Face Off', 'Dirty Diamonds' (during which each member of the band gets their own solo slot), 'He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)', 'Ballad Of Dwight Fry', 'Killer', 'I'm Eighteen', 'Poison' and 'School's Out'. Cooper's wife Cheryl also appears as the Nurse during 'Ballad...' and 'Killer'.

There are also covers of The Doors' 'Break On Through (To The Other Side)', 'The Who's 'My Generation' and Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick In The Wall' in the middle of 'School's...'. The picture quality is quite good, although the focus does appear soft when all the smoke is flying about. The sound quality is okay, but not brilliant, and for some reason the volume of the actual concert footage is quite low, compared to the music that plays over the credits at the end, which blasts out, causing one to frantically press the volume buttons on your remote to try and avoid waking the dead.

In addition to the footage, there is an interesting interview with Cooper that was done the day before this show, in which he answers all the questions fully, rather than with short, stock answers. However, there is a problem here too as, whoever was doing the sound for this appears to have kept moving the microphone, which you can hear quite clearly.

Accompanying the DVD are two CDs which, according to the press release, contain the whole concert, and the two songs missing from the DVD which are The Beatles 'Revolution' and Jimi Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady' which, like the other covers, are quite good.

So, not the best live Alice Cooper show I've seen visually, but you just can't beat the music. If they sort out these volume imbalances at the beginning and end, so that you don't annoy the people at the end of the street when the volume shoots up, it would be a help.
