Definitely an album for the diehard Prog fans among our readership.

Originally formed in 1973, Kaipa took a break in 1982 before reforming in 1991 with 'Sattyg' (translated as 'Mischief') being their seventh release since that reformation. Band members have changed over time with only Hans Lundin (keyboards & vocals) being a constant.

To my ears Kaipa are unique as they blend Classic Prog with Swedish Folk, Fusion with little dabbles into Medieval music, to produce a distinctive sound. All of these aspects are evident, thus encapsulating the Kaipa sound in one place, during the opening epic 'A Map Of Your Secret World' which opens like Yes, moves into a Medieval Folk phase then later there are some contemporary sounding guitar solos and others that are not unlike former member Roine Stolt's work. The shared vocals of Patrik Lundström and Aleena Gibson present another facet to their sound.

Consisting of three epic tracks (twelve minutes plus), two of between seven and ten minutes and two relatively short numbers, the predominantly instrumental 'World Of The Void' is one of those of middling length; again it showcases the skills of guitarist Per Nilsson plus those of keyboardist Lundin to fine effect. Gibson sings this one and it has to be said that, for some, her tone may come across as being rather shrill. Lovers of classic keyboard sounds will relish Lundin's Hammond Organ work though.

The bizarrely titled 'Screwed-upness' is another epic that ebbs and flows between various feels, tempos and styles; not least the sudden alternations between heavy-ish guitar work-outs and genteel Medieval recorder sections (courtesy of guest Frederik Lindqvist). Indeed, there are some pretty heavy passages here so I should add Prog Metal to the genre mix. Drummer Morgan Ågren certainly gets to show his capabilities.

The title track is like a cross between Jethro Tull and Mike Oldfield with recorder in place of the flute. The introduction of guest Elin Rubinsztein's violin takes the track it into different territory again.

The next epic is 'A Sky Full Of Painters' and again it weaves many musical patterns with guitar leading the way much of the time, while the bass of Jonas Reingold is evident, Weather Report came to my mind. The closing guitar solo is rather tasty; meaningful, melodic and not just widdling. 'Unique When We Fall' is a building track with a fine dual vocal arrangement and a nice chunky riff underpinning it.

'Without Time – Beyond Time' closes out the album and features a less strident Gibson on vocals. Once more the track has several facets and puts me in mind of Yes in places, with hints of Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings.

Definitely an album for the diehard Prog fans among our readership.
