The appeal of this album may well be determined by just how much you are a fan of Stevie Nicks.

There have been a host of Stevie Nicks live releases during the last two or three years, mostly unofficial and of varying quality. 'Beauty And The Beast' (the name of a song taken from the 'Wild Heart' release that features here) is a radio broadcast from Cuyahoga Fairgrounds in New York, originally recorded on August 15th in 1986. At the time of the broadcast, she was in the process of touring to promote the 'Rock A Little' album, yet strangely only one song ('Talk To Me') is included in this set. Of the solo material five songs are taken from her debut solo album 'Bella Donna' and two from '...Heart'. We also get two Fleetwood Mac songs (naturally) and a cover of Tom Petty's 'I Need To Know'; a solo set staple to this day.

What is apparent when listening to this release is that the recording has not been "doctored" in the studio at all. That may be a good indication of how official it is as one or two Nicks live releases in the past have clearly been worked on following the actual show. The occasional feedback and missed cues actually add to the attraction and there is certainly evidence of how much the iconic songstress relies on backing vocalists.

Opening track 'Outside The Rain' segues into 'Dreams' nicely and there is a loose feel to proceedings, even though I know longtime live partner-in-crime (guitarist Waddy Wachtel) generally acts as musical director and controls things on stage. The emotional subtleties of '...Beast' and 'Leather And Lace' contrast nicely with the raucous '...Know' and structured 'Talk...', giving Nicks plenty of opportunities to adlib through the dreamy lyrics and haunting melodies. Peter Frampton makes an appearance during 'Stop Draggin' My Heart Around' so my guess would be that he was the support act during the tour. 'How Still My Love' slows things down again before lengthy versions of 'Edge Of Seventeen' and 'Rhiannon' brings the seventy-two minute running time to a close. 'Rhiannon' especially is something of live tour-de-force. The extended intro to the song is a simple piano/vocal duet before the song kicks in properly with the full band.

The appeal of this album may well be determined by just how much you are a fan of Stevie Nicks and in that respect it may be for completists only. Fortunately I am a fan and I have had a pleasurable time listening to 'Beauty And The Beast' constantly for a number of weeks now.
