By no means a bad release, but ...

The debut album from Sleep Of Monsters has already been available in Finland for a while. The band is the brainchild of Babylon Whores lead singer Ike Vil who has assembled another set of musicians as an outlet for his darkly Gothic brand of Melodic Rock.

The album starts promisingly with a cool but brief intro ('Holy*Holy*Holy') before the first full song, 'Nihil, Nihil, Nihil', assaults the aural senses and pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album. There are obvious and immediate comparisons to the likes of HIM, Sisters Of Mercy and The Rasmus whilst touches of Nightwish show themselves during the orchestral arrangements and the use of keyboards.

Each song makes good use of female backing vocals (The Furies) and these provide a nice contrast to Vil whose tone is a little one-dimensional and monotonous to listen to solely. After 'Abomination Street' (very SOM) the middle part of the album tends to drag somewhat and the songs are similarly paced. There are two guitarists in the band line-up, one of whom, Sami Hassinen, acts as the main song-writer alongside Vil. I've no real problem with the material but it would have been nice if there had been more depth to the hooks, for while they are okay they leave no lasting memory, even after a number of plays.

'Through A Mirror Darkly' has an underlying Eastern musical edge. The grinding riffs and solo lines that weave in and out hint at the mid-album variation that is missing and though it is no 'Gates Of Babylon', it is a personal favourite. The haunting female vocals in 'Cobwebs Of Your Mind' are again a prominent feature of the song structure and demand attention but unfortunately are not dominant enough once Vil begins to sing. Apparently some of the lyrical themes are Vil's interpretations of the works of various obscure German writers, and even Samuel Coleridge, but my literary knowledge does not stretch far enough to be able to pass any kind of opinion on their validity or use.

'Produces Reason' is by no means a bad release but I would have preferred more variation in the pacing of the songs, greater use of female vocals (maybe even a duet) and something more uplifting in atmosphere.
