This is stuck in the middle.

Ah, the Purdie shuffle, the lazy, cool beat purveyor for loads of acts including Steely Dan. From Bernard Purdie, drummer sublime, that lovely beat at the back of Toto's 'Rosanna'... that's a Purdie shuffle. There's lots of that here, laidback, gentle, happy chappies with lots of charm; there is good and quite good here, nothing awful but nothing that will knock either of your socks off.

This hard touring U.S. band are clearly seasoned but not jaded, pictured as they are behind an aerial aeroplane, this West Coast wonder often calms you with care; often due to the warm, clean guitar and growling organ, which blossoms and edges all out of frame or just hangs around in the background, ready to rear up.

'When I Fall' has all this but isn't afraid to strut too, clicking fingers to an electric piano and 'Better Think Twice' closes the album as if they have nothing else to prove and so have uncorked the plonk and fired up the cigs; Purdie's glory look as you smile gently. A piano is sometimes added with good value and although the vocals are nondescript, they fit.

Elsewhere, in the less convincing part of the album, the Blues holds sway. Rather like a comprehensive book of lists, even if you're interested, at some point you're going to wonder where this is going, realise and wish it wasn't. Authentic sounding Blues after authentic sounding Blues passes by with little excitement, 'Undisputed' may have a downbeat charm but 'Hard Road' certainly is one; bridge, service stations, bridge, cones hotline...

And so this is stuck in the middle. The organ is a thing of beauty and when allowed to do its business, stunning. The West Coast calmness is a calling card. The Bluesy bluster is boring.
