This is an album packed with stirring, emotional storytelling tunes of real quality.

Formed in Runcorn back in 2007, 'Embers Of The Autumn' is the third album from The Fireflys, a collection of soulful, melancholy even, songs combined with some tasty mid-American style Rockers, split down the middle in almost side-A / side-B fashion.

From the opening of 'Unplayed Guitar' the first five songs are largely acoustic driven tunes, packed full of emotional tales of love and loss. Although TF are most certainly a band with excellent bass work from Stephen Roberts and restrained, yet totally effective drums from Andrea Packer, it's without doubt the voice and song-writing of Lee Wylding that raises the music to top level. Almost in the singer/song-writer style of a Jack Savoratti or even Ed Sheeran, Wylding's smooth emotional vocals are easy and clear to listen to and in tracks like 'Hummingbird' and 'Julianne' there's a touch of real class about it too.

The second half of the album lifts the pace, 'Cemetery Song' has a rousing, Rocking guitar solo to finish, swiftly followed by 'Paper Plane', a catchy Cars/Billy Joel style romp. 'Der Reise' sees the band in full Alt Rock mode with the heaviest track on offer. By comparison 'Hannah Said' and 'Between The Tide' tone things back down a little - a pair of Southern or Country style Rockers.

The U.K.'s answer to Counting Crows may be a fair comparison – this is an album packed with stirring, emotional storytelling tunes of real quality. My only concern would be that this album was first released fifteen months ago back in August 2013. If it hasn't made an impression by now then is it too late and has 'Autumn Of The Embers' missed the boat this time round.

But if quality and perseverance shine through in the end, hopefully there is more to come and The Fireflys will get there soon enough. And at least at that time they will have a top quality back catalogue to go back and explore.
