If you like Skid Row, Crashdiet, Hardcore Superstar or Reckless Love, I think you may write me a thank you note for bringing Confess to your attention.

'Jail' is the full-length debut by Swedish band Confess who I admit were a complete unknown to me. First time I played 'Jail', it was on nice and loud and I went off to paint a wall; a minute or two later, I put down that paintbrush. 'Relationshit' was awesome, high octane Sleazy Punk and just what I like from Sleazy Swedes. I sent a YouTube link to some Sleaze loving friends and asked "have you heard of them?"...the response was also "no" followed quickly by "holy shit, why haven't I?"...so it wasn't just me then!

'Scream' is fairly typical of the genre, they reminded me a little of early Skid Row and the little known Trash. 'Pay Before I Go' has an Americana feel but is also Thrashy and fun, there's some really nice dual guitars on this album and the musicianship is a cut above many others in the genre. The songs are well crafted too; there honestly isn't one on the album I dislike. The ballad 'Take Aim' is choral and orchestral although it has to be said there are no loving, smoochy lyrics, it's the blacker shade of pale; 'Bloodstained Highway' being a case in point.

John Elliot has a strong voice that suits the songs and has enough strength to extend notes and screams that many cop out from. Put this together with a rather powerhouse rhythm section and you realise this is actually a rather talented band. I love the quirky sounds they throw in, such as an Irish jig in the middle of 'Setting Sails'. What makes music a "genre" is a similarity in sound and this is no exception, but they constantly throw you off course with a real Metal riff or full-on harmonies.

It's difficult to pick a favourite track but 'Got Lucky' is a contender; I can't really explain why but it drives along and comes in with a lighter waving, audience participation chorus. 'Cardiac Arrest' is riffy, 'Get Me Down' would be a great set starter/finisher (a good, honest Rock 'n' Roll track) and 'Intervention (Sin and Tonic Pt 2)' is a nod towards Scandinavian Symphonic with a harder edge. On reflection regarding a favourite track, I have to say I might just plump for the closer 'What's Love Got To Do With It' (yes... from Tina Turner). Covers can go either way, they can fail miserably or the band can put their own stamp on it and make it an awesome song in its own right; Confess pull off the latter.

If you like Skid Row, Crashdiet, Hardcore Superstar or Reckless Love, I think you may write me a thank you note for bringing Confess to your attention.
