A genuine contender who should have gone on to bigger and better things.

(THIS IS THE FIRST PART OF THE REVIEW, THE LINK TO THE SECOND PART CAN BE FOUND BELOW)

The latest two releases in the 'Lost U.K. Jewels – Collectors Series' are a bit of a mixed bag; one is a genuine contender who should have gone on to bigger and better things, the other were a good live band whose recordings I'd never heard before, but hearing them now I understand why maybe they didn't.

Number seven in the series are Glasgow legends Zero Zero, formed in the mid-eighties by ex-China White/Strangeways singer Stevie Doherty, who along with guitarist John MacMillan, bassist Andy McCafferty and drummer Joe James, recorded a four-track demo in 1986 that should have won them a major record deal. Classy, guitar-based AOR was the order of the day with 'Heroes Last Forever' being a perfect example, whilst 'Forget About Love' and 'Heart And Soul' were other superb melodic tunes that highlighted Doherty's Strangeways heritage and 'Love And Run' hinted at things to come with its huge, "chanty" chorus.

The next five tracks come from a whopping seven years later, by which time they'd replaced James with Paul McManus and heavied up their sound, and whilst the AOR purists were probably disappointed, four of the five tracks work really well with Doherty's raunchier vocal style and the louder guitar, bass and drum attack. Tunes like 'Rock Me (Rock All Night)', the wonderful 'Lovers And Losers', the dynamic 'Nothin' Left To Lose' and the Bluesier Thunder/Skin direction of 'Take The Hurt' really do stand up well today, although in 1993 they were probably at least a year too late. Amazingly the last two tracks on this disc were recorded this year by the same line-up, and as pleasant, catchy and well-written as these Pop Rock tunes are, they sound a bit thin after the previous demo and there's no sign of the natural grit in Doherty's voice that his work with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band a few years ago suggests he still has. Even so, the ZZ demos have been long overdue a proper release and this is among the best the label has put out thus far ... (click on the link below to read the second part of the review)
