Deceptively sophisticated, expertly crafted, Melodic Progressive Power Metal... very impressive.

Now this is interesting... an old-school, Progressively-infused, Melodic Metal band from Freiburg in Germany; young upstarts Alpha Tiger have thus far largely passed U.K. audiences by. However, with the release of their third album 'iDentity', I'm sure all that's about to change as anyone with a penchant for old-school Queensryche or Fates Warning, mixed in with a tincture of Iron Maiden, Riot or Armored Saint, would be well advised to check them out at the earliest opportunity.

Previously called Satin Black (under which epithet they released an album 'Harlequin' back in 2008 followed by the 'Martyr's Paradise' EP some two years later), they switched to AT in 2011 and have never really looked back since. Characterised by the sky skimming vocals of front-man Stephan Dietrich (very Michael Kiske), and the razor sharp, twin lead guitar attack of Peter Langforth and Alexander Backasch, the AT soundscape is heavy on melody and melodrama yet delivered with a crisp, unmistakably Metallic bite.

Signed to Steamhammer/SPV after having been dropped by Century Media last year, 'iDentity' proves itself to be their most accomplished release to date, the perfect middle digit salute to their former patron's if ever there was one!

After the obligatory moody intro piece (can't quite pinpoint the tune, but for some reason I recognise it) opener 'Lady Liberty' roars into life. Born aloft by some decidedly frenetic riffs, it is highly reminiscent of early Queensryche at times, albeit a Queensryche with the aforementioned former Helloween front-man on vocals! Following cut 'Scripted Reality' (nice title!) slows thing down a little and moves the band into a sort of hybrid Angra meets Helloween territory... tasty stuff indeed!

And in reality, having grabbed your undivided attention with that opening salvo the band never really let go. Filled with plenty of ambient light and shade, moody time changes and deliciously piquant angst, tracks such as 'This World Will Burn', 'We Won't Take It Anymore' and 'Revolution In Progress' all hit their target first time and maintain interest with supreme ease through that first half a dozen or so spins.

Deceptively sophisticated, expertly crafted, Melodic Progressive Power Metal, 'iDentity' should by rights push Alpha Tiger into the major leagues... very impressive!
