Nightwish - 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' Hot

Astoundingly epic.

Nightwish fans have been waiting a while for this album. With Anette Olzon's sad departure and Floor Jansen's confirmed recruitment to the vocal ranks, the burning question was what would Holopainen come up with to fit the latter's voice. It was universally agreed, among the cognoscenti, that Jansen was the perfect fit; the perfect amalgam of Tarja Turunen's majestic Operatic and Olzon's lilting soprano. The other question on everyone's lips was how good was she going to be on this record?

Well, the wait is finally over. Finland's greatest ever musical export and one of the world's leading Metal bands has delivered an album so spellbindingly huge in its concept, breadth and magnitude that one wonders where Holopainen can take Nightwish after this?

Played as it should be, very loud and on the type of audio equipment you'd sell your grandmother for, the aural sonics are lodged in the auditory nerve of your inner ear. They don't dissipate until the final sounds of the album begin to float away from your subconscious, after your brain has been stimulated with the kind of sensory overload associated with large intakes of caffeine.

Influenced by the naturalist, geologist and evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, the ethologist, evolutionary biologist and atheist Richard Dawkins and astronomer, cosmologist, astrophysicist, and astrobiologist Carl Sagan, Holopainen has immersed himself into a subject so grandiose that to have achieved what he has is quite breathtaking. He regards the twenty-four minute, five part epic 'The Greatest Show On Earth' as his finest achievement in song-writing. Having to dispense with the birth of the universe due to time constraints, Holopainen elected to start his focus on the birth of Earth through to mankind and then destruction. Dawkins was persuaded to lend his voice to various spoken parts adding some gravitas to proceedings and with animal sounds to heavy percussion, Orchestral to overblown dramatic bombast, choirs and lilting voice song alongside piano, pipes and searing guitar – it has it all.

The album covers subjects as diverse as 'Edema Ruh', a nomadic cultural group of travellers and entertainers, and 'The Eyes Of Sharbat Gula', one of the most famous photographs in history of an Afghan girl refugee that adorned the cover of National Geographic. The album title itself is lifted from a Darwin quotation and album opener 'Shudder Before The Beautiful' (complete with a Dawkins spoken intro) is as fine a bombastic and heavy song with crunching riffs that you could wish for from Nightwish.

With Troy Donockley now a full time member and Kai Hahto occupying the drum stool due sadly to Jukka Nevalainen's insomnia issues, you have a six-piece band carrying Symphonic Metal to hitherto unreached heights. Astoundingly epic!
