Interview with LTNT (Lieutenant)

LTNT (Lieutenant)

Interview by Mónica Castedo-López

To play Download before even releasing an album is a big deal, and one of the privileged bands in this category is LTNT (Lieutenant). In 2014 they were named by BBC as one of the best acts on the Festival Republic Stage at the annual Reading and Leeds festivals. The London based young trio was eager to promote their forthcoming debut album and, to that effect, they had a brief conversation onsite with yours truly. Drummer Neil Ganeshan, singer and guitarist Liam Lever, and bassist Ben Clarke Big reveal their big ambitions and their thirst for success.

Give us a brief about the band history and style.

We've been playing for about three years with the same line-up. We're a bit grungy, a bit heavy rock, a mix of The Beatles and Limp Bizkit. CKY are an awesome band and an influence, and we'd like to be like Pantera. Our main influences are Ministry, Pantera and The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Do you enjoy being a trio?

We love it. Nobody steps on anybody else's toes and there's no fucking up. If you fuck up, it's so obvious. All my favourite bands are a three-piece or a three-piece with a singer, which is the same thing.

You have your debut album coming out on 4th September. How did you manage to get to play Download?

Things are going really well for us. I think it's probably to do with the fact that we have a manager that is a nut case at getting things done. We also have a great booking agent taking care of us, and a good PR agent. It's a small but well-formed team that got us here.

How did you find your performance here today? Was it a nerve wrecking experience?

Amazing. My hands hurt! There's no way to get nervous about anything because we don't care about anything. We play for our lives and just take things as they come. But it was fucking brilliant, a little bit stressful but a good gig. We had a good crowd; it was packed even before we started playing. I was really happy about that.

Are any of the other bands playing this weekend here at Download your heroes?

I love Mike Patton and I was kind of disappointed with the crowd for Faith No More because I love Faith No More. I've seen them so many times. I'm sorry but I hate Muse, and everybody at the front was waiting for Muse. Marilyn Manson was a great show.

You played Camden Rocks a few weeks ago.

That was mental too. Tiny little room, I thought I was going to pass out at least four times during the set, but if you don't feel wrong by the time you're done, you're fucked and you don't deserve to do this for a living.

You also did a few shows around the country in April and May.

We went out with Jettblack and Sons of Icarus, and we have some other dates but nothing major as we're waiting for the record to come out. The next big tour is in August.

How come you are touring before the album is released?

We have a whole month with Seether in Europe.

What are the plans after the album comes out?

We have some touring in October/November but we can't talk about it just yet. Everything is going really well. I think we have a really good record and fully believe in it. When we put it out people are going to respond to it and hopefully we'll be on the main stage here at Download.
