Are debut albums allowed to be this good?

Bathgate in Scotland isn't known for its rich heritage in Rock bands, but it's about to be. The King Lot – a threesome who have a huge breadth of influences and aren't afraid to show them – have a debut record out and put simply, you need to hear it. Hard hitting and in your face yet as melodic as you could wish for and memorable in way that few debuts could even hope for, this self-titled platter is an album to sing along to, shake your ass to, punch the air to and play air guitar to. If you can think of it, you can do it to this album... yes, even that!

Let's start the Generation Game conveyor belt to see what influences we have up for grabs tonight. Oh, there's The Wildhearts (good game, good game), you'll find them in the opening blast of 'As They Burn'. Next up there is an aggressive, Punky Def Leppard (nice to see them, to see them nice), that's the utterly addictive 'Addicted'. Pay attention, following that it's Rod Stewart and now we're talking the verse of 'Telegram' and in fairness it's more like The Faces than Rod The Mod, while the chorus is the sort of thing Gun have been trying to write for a long time (Higher than a Jack you say??? Sorry...wrong game show...). This leads us nicely onto the acoustic Rawk An' Rowl of 'Queen Of Hearts', which simply dares you not to sing along!

We haven't even touched on 'Let's Get Together' where a clunkering drum beat heralds in a burst of guitars that raises the hairs on the back of the neck and holds them there, rigid, for just over three minutes. This is prime-time Little Angels and come on, who doesn't soil themselves at the thought of that? At times U2 spring to mind, even Baby Chaos (remember them? No? You should!) make an appearance, marking The King Lot out as a band whose one and only aim is to make the best music they can and to hang with genre tag nonsense; good time Rock n' Roll never needed no other name!

This all leaves only one question... are debut albums allowed to be this good?
