Certainly a sterling effort.

Up until a week ago I was only aware of two Melodic Rock/AOR bands from Brazil, Pleasure Maker and Auras (no doubt you guys/gals know others), so it was a pleasant surprise to receive 'Ride On The Stars' all the way from the land of beautiful women, football, nuts and... close shaves(!). Both the PM and Auras albums contained worthy material, but the difference in production was notable; the former released on a lesser known label, whilst the latter found a home with the mighty Frontiers conglomerate. Superstitious, despite seeking adoption with a reputable label, have produced a stimulating album that sits somewhere in between.

Originating from Sao Paolo, this five-piece consist of Luis Wasques (vocals), Rodrigo Cordeiro (guitar), Daniel Mattos (bass), Flavio Gasperini (drums) and Lael Campos (keys). They cite Europe, Def Leppard, Treat, Mr Big and Toto amongst their major influences, and there are snippets of those bands, among others, on display here. Their self-titled debut was released in 2011 and Wasques recently informed me "we were forging our sound and there was (sic) strong tunes...' but the " album comes with a higher and mature level... musically it's way, way ahead of the first one". Unfortunately, I've not heard the debut but can certainly share his positivity regarding this sophomore release.

'Ride...' commences with a N.A.S.A. style countdown, which I feel is a tad unnecessary and certainly doesn't compliment the title track that immediately follows; but what a track it is! An opulent AOR melody with superb guitar tones and a pulsating rhythm section that underpins Wasques' vocals, which are impressive, varied and ooze emotion – imagine White Widdow, Angels Or Kings et al and you wouldn't be far away. This edgy AORness occupies the majority of the album; 'The End Of The Age', 'Black Cat Heart', 'Have You Ever' and 'My Lady' are impressively penned and executed songs that will soon grab you by the Brazil nuts (so to speak)!

Call it variation, playing what you feel is right or not knowing your true direction, Superstitious are not totally subservient to AOR/Melodic Rock – 'Naughty Dancing' and 'Errors Of My Way' have a vintage Deep Purple ambience, and even the Synth Rock of 'Goodbye' (initially the runt of the litter), becomes rather endearing after several spins. Finally the two ballads, 'Phoenix' and 'Freedom Cry', proficiently display their softer side.

The talent and commitment from all involved is undeniable, but Cordeiro deserves a special mention; his unpretentious riffs and searing solos are rather tasty and never outstay their welcome. 'Ride On The Stars' is certainly a sterling effort, and with the support of a prominent label, they really could be taking a ride on the stars.
