An interesting collectible for obsessive Rhoads fans or for fans of the featured musicians.

In 1980, when the blonde pocket rocket that was Randy Rhoads hit the 'Blizzard Of Ozz' stage running with 'I Don't Know', it was difficult to explain what it was like seeing him perform for the first time. We've got used to the various riff-meisters and shredders over the years but this classically-trained guitarist who merged this with his own Heavy Metal style was one of the first Neo-Classical kind.

When Rhoads died in a stupid flying accident thirty-three years ago (to the day as I write this) the Rock world were shocked to the core. The sense of loss was not only for the young life cut tragically short, but the loss of talent and the potential for that talent was huge.

So many guitarists that came after cited him as an influence that it's not surprising that they would want to put together a tribute. The brainchild of Bruce Kulick, 'Immortal Randy Rhoads – The Ultimate Tribute' was recorded and produced by him at his own studio. Bass for most of the album is provided by Rudy Sarzo with the vocals supplied by Tim "Ripper" Owens, Serj Tankian, Rhoads' brother Kelle and Chuck Billy. The guitar contributions read like a "Who's Who" of the great and the good; Tom Morello, Jon Donais, Alexi Laiho, Doug Aldrich, Bruce Kulick, George Lynch, Dweezil Zappa, Joel Hoekstra, Gus G., Brad Gillis, and Bernie Torme.

The idea behind the album is worthy but (and I'm pretty certain none of the performers would really argue with me or be offended by this) the problem is, it just isn't Rhoads. I was lucky, I saw him several times and he was a unique force, he had a charisma that just can't be recreated. For me, this is not so much a tribute as a celebration of a life by his friends and as such it is a solid album. Owens does a fine mash-up of Rob Halford and Ozzy Osbourne and, in my opinion, of all the vocals his are the ones that work best on the tracks. Gillis' 'Suicide Solution' captures the riffiness of Rhoads while Gus G. gets the feel of 'Goodbye To Romance'. Without doubt for me, and by far, the best track on the album is Torme's version of 'Flying High Again'; out of all the covers he manages to capture the essence of Rhoads, but of course this is my personal taste and others can (and I'm sure will) disagree.

'Immortal Randy Rhoads – The Ultimate Tribute' is an interesting collectible for obsessive Rhoads fans or for fans of the featured musicians, it's well produced and it's heart is in the right place but it just ain't the "Immortal One" himself.
