For a new band they display a maturity that many only achieve after several releases.

Talk about not letting the grass grow beneath your feet. Italy's Secret Rule were formed just over a year ago yet in that short time frame created and recorded their debut album 'Transposed Emotions'. Fronted by Angela Di Vincenzo and joined by guitarist Andy Menario, who has in the past worked with the likes of Vinny Appice and Jeff Pilson, along with Michele Raspanti on bass and drummer Ruben Ramirez, the band set about writing the material that would become their first record. '...Emotions' features an ambitious, full-sounding production creating an impressive range of dynamics with plenty of punch yet retaining a subtlety that is required for what is at times complex Progressive Metal.

'The Journey' starts things off at a frantic pace with swirling keyboards riding the wave over a driving riff; Di Vincenzo quickly stamps her impressive voice all over the song. That voice just gets better on 'The Sin', a groove heavy riff straight from Lzzy Hale's arsenal along with a sweet, melodic delivery by Di Vincenzo combine with such effectiveness. As the album progresses SR hit their stride and open up. 'True Friend' commences with some soaring Dream Theater-esque keyboards before Di Vincenzo's Pop-infused melody serves as a counter point to the more sinister guitar riff. Menario really makes his mark with an inspired lead break.

Sometimes Progressive Metal albums can be too relentless, a barrage of notes and time changes that can be a real chore to listen to in one sitting. SR score highly here by varying the pace and the mood and heaping on piles of melody to keep the ideas fresh. 'Lifeless' is a perfect example of this and features a killer chorus again highlighting Di Vincenzo's impressive vocals. 'Sensation', with its almost Industrial and hypnotic keyboard refrain, has a killer hook that gives SR a heads up against many of their peers.

Probably Di Vincenzo's finest moment is her beautiful delivery during the haunting 'Reena', a song enhanced by a dreamy solo by Menario. It is a perfect example of sometimes less is indeed more. 'Vision', another ballad, comes a very close second. 'Secret Place' toughens things up somewhat matching an Industrial undercurrent to a killer NWOBHM-inspired riff while 'Dawn Of Crisis' moves through a myriad of moods and themes to bring the album to a dramatic close.

'Transposed Emotions' is a hugely promising debut album from SR and for a new band they display a maturity that many only achieve after several releases. If Secret Rule can build on this impressive base then the next couple of albums will see them as serious contenders.
