The music is just a variation on that produced by so many artists these days but the quality is high and I know that I love it.

I'm struggling to bring to mind more than a few Modern Rock bands that hail from New Zealand (Auckland to be precise). Like A Storm are essentially the Brooks brothers; Chris (lead vocals/guitar/keyboards/programming), Matt (lead guitar/ keyboards/programming) and Kent (bass/keyboards/programming). They have been active since 2005 and have managed to secure support slots on a number of tours by high profile bands (primarily in the U.S.A.) including Alter Bridge, Shinedown, Korn, Creed and Puddle of Mudd. 'Awaken The Fire' is LAS's third album but their first with major label support.

The uncompromising brand of hard hitting Modern Rock with a twist (I'll come back to that) gets off to a great start with 'Chaos' signaling an energetic mantra and a readily commercial writing ethic. The music's brutality blends perfectly with some strong melodies and features an intelligent use of computer generated sounds and effects. The twist comes in the form of a didgeridoo and, despite what your initial thoughts may be, it works really well and compliments the computerised elements.

The use of loops, samples and keyboards (and didgeridoo) imbues a sense of scope, epic in nature, and adds an extra dimension to the whole album's proceedings. The didgeridoo appears again on the second song 'Love The Way You Hate Me', once again influencing the impact of an up-tempo Modern Rock workout. 'Wish You Hell' is a Cajun-flavoured foot-stomper and a great choice as a single, sitting nicely next to 'Break Free' which, along with 'Southern Skies' and 'Ordinary', act as ballad breaks for the songs of a more incendiary style.

I could have done without the band's take on 'Gangster Paradise', even though I've heard worse covers, as it somewhat detracts from the original material. The production enhances the big guitars and powerful vocals and I can imagine how good everything must sound when performed live.

Like A Storm are by no means original; the music is just a variation on that produced by so many artists these days but the quality is high and I know that I love it.
