A dark and brooding solo album that should appeal to fans of music with a Gothic slant.

Berlin-based Florian Grey is the former lead singer from Eaves End. He recorded two EPs and an album with the band and has played live with the likes of Tarja Turunen and Doro Pesch. After leaving EE, he worked as a guest singer for different projects and did some session work. Along with musician Bjorn Meindl, Grey has now created a dark and brooding solo album that should appeal to fans of music with a Gothic slant, similar in style I would suggest to The Mission and Sisters Of Mercy.

Now whilst 'Gone' certainly has some admirable qualities, after several plays I was left with an overwhelming sense of melancholy and depression. With the exception of 'A Black Symphony' and possibly 'In Control' (tracks five and six), the mid-tempo attitude leaves the listener with little in the way of inspiration. In fact several songs (if that is what they can loosely be described as) are positively downbeat and morose. The sombre theatrics may allude to a reflective cadence to some but the second half of 'Gone' generates no interest at all.

'My Fear' and 'Laudanum' get things off to a decent enough start and Grey's vocals are actually quite good. Bizarre as it may seem his voice, during 'Laudanum' especially, reminds me of former Asia singer John Payne. Piano and keyboards dominate the sound and it is only when the guitars break through on the aforementioned '...Symphony' and '...Control' that minimal sparks fly. The momentum is then lost completely as 'The Way I Die', 'Once' and others drag things to a merciful conclusion.

The album's producer is Chris Harms, singer and band leader of Lord Of The Lost. Apparently Grey showcased 'Gone' during an acoustic tour with LOTL back in April so I'm glad I wasn't in the audience for any of those shows.

'Gone' is not a piece of work to be listened to constantly and certainly not something to accompany the excellent summer climate we are currently experiencing. Maybe I'll return to it again in a few months, but only if the release schedule really falters during the back end of 2015.
