It's just the cynic in me that has to question the motives behind such a release so soon after the original.

This is going to be a tough one as, conflicting loyalties aside, this release is in many respects the epitome of what's wrong with the record industry right now.

As longstanding readers are likely aware, I'm a huge Axel Rudi Pell fan. I have been since his Steeler days back in the late 1980s with his quest to keep the vibrant Rainbow legacy alive was a veritable oasis in the inhospitable 1990s. I am even more so these days as he's doggedly stuck to his principles; methodically delivering album after album of often stunning, guitar driven Melodic Rock of the highest calibre. He may have had his detractors, but in his chosen field (for me at least) Pell has no peers.

'Into The Storm' is his fifteenth studio album in a solo career that has spanned more than twenty-five years, an album that is quite simply the best Pell release since the mighty 'The Masquerade Ball'. Whether the change of drummer (from Mike Terrana to Bobby Rondinelli) has spurred Pell into pulling the metaphorical rabbit out of the hat is a debatable (if somewhat moot) point, but on the evidence of tracks like 'Tower Of Lies', 'Touching Heaven' or the mighty title track itself, there can be no question that Pell and his band have hit a creative purple patch.

So you may ask, what's the problem? Well, '...Storm' was actually released about six months ago – I originally gave it a glowing précis back in issue 62 – so I have to question the validity of yet another version so soon afterwards. I'm sure the company line will be that they're trying to attract new fans to what I'd concur is a truly stunning album, but what about all the genuine fans who shelled out their hard earned for the original version? Are they going to see this as anything more than a cynical ploy to get them to buy essentially the same album twice?

For anyone new to Pell or this album (or indeed those "must have everything" types), this new version is quite tempting. It's been repackaged (although the new cover art is nowhere near as stunning as the original), the booklet has been extended and enhanced with new photos and liner notes from Pell himself, and the second disc has three recently recorded live tracks and a video for 'Long Way To Go'. I do take issue with the two "bonus" tracks on the main disc as they were also included in the original "Special Edition" version back in January.

A world class album without a doubt, it's just the cynic in me that has to question the motives behind such a release so soon after the original.
