NWOBHM fans should hack off the arms of anyone who stands between them and this record.

If you're into NWOBHM, then you'll come to this as if it's a long lost classic from the beginning of the 1980s. It's authentic sounding but in fact it's neither from the 1980s nor Britain. Colossus are from North Carolina and this record is actually two EPs; 'Drunk On Blood' from 2009 and 'The Sepulcher Of The Mirror Warlocks' from 2012 welded together. They work well together and make for a strong cohesive album.

Influenced obviously by the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, this gallops in places like a horse with its tail on fire with great guitar work from a three-pronged guitar attack. Sean Buchanan's voice is clean and while not as mercurial as either Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson, he does a good enough job whilst also adding an American twang to the proceedings.

Colossus manages the difficult job of sounding authentic without plagiarising. This is the sound of Metal before the big four stepped up and took Metal down a harder direction and spawned the multitude of Metal sub-genres that exist today. Here there are "manly" songs of swords and battle. 'A Year Later (There's Still Meat Left in the Skull)' has a slower yet more epic quality than some of the faster tunes.

This song slightly reminded me of Ilium. 'Stoneburner' is about weapons of mass destruction which further compounds the "retro" feel as it conjures up those concerns of the 1980's Cold War era. 'Jihad, Jihad' reminds you though that, at least lyrically, this is a band operating in the today's world. This is another track that has an epic feel with its Eastern-influenced intro. The standard across the material is consistently good and the wall of guitars found here is best heard at ear bleeding volume. The songs have some decent hooks without ever reaching the "classic" status of their influences.

The band's promotion makes it known that Colossus have a sense of humour, but this ain't Steel Panther. Some might argue that the genre is faintly ridiculous anyway but beyond the slightly over the top cover art (something a fourteen year old boy would design for an album cover) and a title like the aforementioned '...Skull', it's not parodying the genre but wallowing in it. NWOBHM fans should hack off the arms of anyone who stands between them and this record.
