If you loved the original this will enhance those feelings further.

An Italian Symphonic Power Metal act formed by guitarist Aldo Lonobile back in 1997; as contemporaries of the likes of Labyrinth and Rhapsody, Secret Sphere are quite rightly now considered elder statesmen of their domestic scene... if not the whole of mainland Europe. Snapped up on the strength of their 1998 'Between Story And Legend' demo, to date they've released seven studio albums of bombastically overblown Power Metal culminating in the intoxicating 'Portrait Of A Dying Heart' a couple of years ago.

Widely lauded as one of the genre's hidden gems on its initial 2001 release; sophomore album 'A Time Never Come' has over the years been used not only as their benchmark, but as a litmus test for the legions of acts following in their footsteps. Mixing together elements of Angra, Fates Warning and Helloween (as well as a nod towards classic Queensryche), its sonic canvas depicted a dramatic, ever changing, musical landscape punctuated with histrionic crescendos and thought provoking troughs.

Long out of its original print run, increasing demand prompted SS to consider a limited Japanese market re-run, but that soon snowballed into something much more substantial. With a rejuvenated line-up gelling around vocalist Michele Luppi for the aforementioned '...Heart', the original plan morphed into the current version of SS completely re-recording '...Come' to put their own stamp on it.

Now, whilst I can see it as a useful tool for bands wrestling back control of the rights to certain songs from a former record company, on the whole I'm not a huge fan of re-recording previous material. The cynic in me is always suspicious of the motives – let's face it, on the whole it's a fairly quick, easy and cheap way of extracting a few more shekels from your existing fan base – preferring instead to see artists take the moral high ground and pour their collective hearts and souls into something new.

That said, from time to time, the "re-imagined" treatment can breathe new life in to an old set of songs and to their credit, that's exactly what SS have done to a large extent. A lot of that has to be down to Luppi; his emotive vocals adding a distinctly different hue to those of predecessor Roberto Messina on tracks such as 'The Mystery Of Love', 'The Brave' and 'Lady Of Silence'. Additionally, the background melodrama, which always underpinned the original, has been teased out even further to give the whole production a bold, far reaching dynamic feel.

If you loved the original this will enhance those feelings further. If it passed you by, this is a great reinterpretation of a pivotal album that helped push Italian Metal from the lower leagues in to the top flight.
