The re-birth of a band who obviously love what they're doing.

It seems our Reviews Editor knows me better than I know myself and has earmarked me for quite a few albums recently that have gone on to become personal favourites. I may have heard something by Teramaze in the dim and distant past, but I'm sure it was galloping Metal in the style of Iron Maiden or Pantera and not Melodic Prog Metal, and I certainly wasn't expecting an album of the calibre of early Dream Theater, Circus Maximus, Enchant or Seventh Wonder.

Hailing from the unlikely city of Melbourne, Australia, I obviously didn't get the memo that the band had changed tack slightly on their fourth full album 'Esoteric Symbolism' in 2014, and gone even more tuneful when several members left and original guitarist Dean Wells and drummer Dean Kennedy were joined by singer Nathan Peachey and bassist Luis Eguren; the new line-up signing with growing Mascot Records offshoot Music Theories Recordings.

'Her Halo' is an enjoyable experience from the first seconds of multi-hued twelve minute opener 'An Ordinary Dream (Enla Momento)' to the equally epic twists of closer 'Delusions Of Grandeur', mixing speedy riffs and subtle guitar tones, swirling synths and beautiful piano (details are sketchy and I have no idea who tickles the ivories!), alongside fluid bass runs and skilled drumming.

But it's the attractive qualities of Peachey's clean vocal that take Teramaze into the big league. He has an appealing clarity to his voice that sets him apart from others in the genre, his uncluttered delivery among the stop/start riffery of 'To Love, A Tyrant' and soaring melodies of the title track setting him up as a star of the future. It should come as no surprise that he shines on the simplest song on the album, the emotional power ballad 'Broken', but he's equally at home with the heavier parts and handles it all with consummate ease.

Instrumentally the band are faultless too, not afraid to take their collective feet off the gas for many lighter sections with carefully chosen percussion, tasteful bass, heart-rending guitar solos and unapologetically old-school synth runs. The busy instrumental 'Trapeze' shows off their chops but elsewhere every member plays for the song to create many memorable moments.

Clear and powerful, 'Her Halo' is the re-birth of a band who obviously love what they're doing, and with the likes of DT and Fates Warning still heading off into different territories, there's a market for the kind of band they once were.

Eight melody-laden songs with a couple of lengthy epics, sounds kinda familiar doesn't it?
