Financed by the fans and made for the fans, it delivers on every level.

After last year's 'Flowers And Dirt', Bernie Torme's first solo album for fifteen years, he's back via the power of Pledge.com with 'Blackheart', this time within fifteen months rather than years. With over forty years in the business the Torme style is pretty well defined and there's no real surprises here, just an album packed with classic Blues-based Rock 'n' Roll, a touch of Jimi Hendrix-influenced Psychedelia, all laced with Torme's trademark Strat wails and unique lead work.

'Golden Pig' kicks off, an energetic up-tempo Rocker and a perfect showcase of the all action rhythm and lead style. I don't think it's been on a studio album, but having featured on 2001's 'Scorched Earth – Live' release it sounds like a certainty for the forthcoming tour. This and indeed the next four tracks '1985 (Keeper Of The Flame), 'On Fire', 'Better Days' and 'Snake In The Garden' all reflect the classic, Hard Rocking part of the Torme experience. No Torme album though would be complete with a couple of slower ballad types, atmospheric rhythms being picked out showing Torme's love of 1960's Psychedelic Rock with 'Flow' and 'Into The Sun'; 'Flow' in particular building to a stunning Bluesy guitar solo.

Chris Heilmann on bass and Ian Harris on drums again make up a solid rhythm section, giving Torme the freedom to weave his own unique sound throughout. And if there was to be any quibble regarding 'Blackheart' it can only be that it is the quintessential Torme album. For fans who follow his work you get exactly what you would expect. This is raw, seemingly recorded pretty much live in the studio with minimal overdubs. Admittedly I'm a fan of his music for over thirty years, but I still want to be surprised by something a bit adventurous from time to time.

That said, even I can't argue with the quality of the songs on display here. 'Blackheart' benefits from being a single twelve track album compared to last year's double release. Not that '...Dirt' was packed with fillers, but this just seems a bit more cohesive and structured in terms of pacing and running order. There's a bit more Rock 'n' Roll with 'Pain Song' and 'Dirt' along with some traditional Blues provided by the steel slide guitar of 'Steady Roller Blues'. The album bows out with 'Party's Over' with its harmonica intro and evocative guitar solo to close.

If you know Bernie Torme's music 'Blackheart' is a great album that will meet all your expectations. If you don't, it's the perfect example of what he's about. You get what you pay for, so with 'Blackheart' financed by the fans and made for the fans, it delivers on every level.
