Stratovarius will always be top dogs for my money.

It's been two and a half years since the last "new" Stratovarius album (2013's brilliant 'Nemesis'), but after taking a bit of extended downtime to recharge their collective batteries following the associated world tour, the band are chomping at the bit to get out there once again. However, before that happens in earnest we have the not so small matter of 'Eternal' which is, by my reckoning, the sixteenth (if you count 2001's 'Intermission' set) studio album to proudly bear the Stratovarius name!

Only vocalist Timo Kotipelto and keyboard maestro Jens Johansson remain from the much lauded "classic" line-up, but the steady infusion of new blood that followed the rather dour 'Stratovarius' release ten years ago (yep, I did a double take as well!) has certainly not dulled their appetite for grand sweeping gestures one bit... if anything it's made them even more voracious! That may be a bit of an anathema to some of the diehard Timo Tolkki fans out there (and believe me, I still think the guy is a genius), but with perspective the severing of ties has proven to best thing that could've happened for all concerned.

So having been thoroughly impressed with both 'Elysium' and 'Nemesis', what does 'Eternal' have to offer? In short the answer is more of the same... but with the usual subtle nuances and different embellishments that have become a band trademark over the years.

Bombastic opener 'My Eternal Dream' is the kind of thunderous Neo-Classical gallop we've come to expect, nay demand, from the band yet the towering orchestration and choral harmonies make it sound bigger than ever – great guitar/keys interplay in the middle too! The equally melodramatic 'Man In The Mirror' is a another tumultuous tome; it's Eastern flavour offering glimpses of 'Babylon' from 'Episode' yet at the same time dipping a toe into the kind of Symphonic excesses you'd normally associate with Royal Hunt.

The eleven and a half minute 'Lost Saga' which closes the album is a broiling epic of near biblical proportions; the kind of grandiloquent finale first introduced by Tolkki that the band have continued to excel at ever since... yet somehow it still sounds fresh and different.

Elsewhere the deliciously piquant 'Shine In The Dark', the atmospheric 'Lost Without A Trace' and pulsating 'Few Are Those' (to name but three) add depth and substance to what is in essence a veritable aural banquet!

The playing field may be much more crowded these days, but whilst ever they keep crafting albums as strong as 'Eternal', Stratovarius will always be top dogs for my money!
