A real gem of an album, just one in his ever expanding collection of works.

When it comes to having plenty of talented friends to call on, Swedish multi-instrumentalist Magnus Karlsson is a man with an enviable list of contacts. Allen/Lande, Starbreaker, Primal Fear, Place Vandome, Kiske/Somerville... The list is long and impressive, and he's delved into it for the second of his Free Fall projects, following 2013's impressive debut.

As before, Karlsson plays the music, produces the album and handles the song-writing, and as before he's drafted an impressive roster of top Rock vocalists to bring life to his songs. Returning faces include David Readman (Pink Cream 69) and Tony Harnell (ex-TNT, Skid Row), who are joined by Jorn Lande (Masterplan, Ark), Harry Hess (Harem Scarem), Joe Lynn Turner, Rebecca De la Motte and more. It's a veritable who's who of Rock, but good as these vocalists are it wouldn't be much fun if the songs were shite, and thankfully Karlsson has provided some top notch tunes throughout.

Stylistically, 'Kingdom Of Rock' doesn't hold on to a particular style, preferring to craft the songs to the singers whilst remaining heavy throughout. Tony Martin, for example, gets a cracking Dio/Black Sabbath style track 'When The Sky Falls', whereas Lande gets to use his full power on the title track.

Even Karlsson himself sings on a couple of songs, proving himself to be a gifted vocalist amongst his plethora of other talents, with 'I Am Coming For You' delivering a great AOR tune. De La Motte, the only female vocalist, is given a really sweet power ballad that's enlivened by a proper widdly solo by Karlsson.

'Kingdom Of Rock' may have a cliché title and a cover to match, but contained within are eleven songs that ooze class and creativity. Whilst all the songs are firmly in the Rock bracket, they are different enough from each other to keep in fresh after several listens, with the different vocalists allowing each song to shine on its own merits.

Magnus Karlsson should be proud in delivering a real gem of an album, just one in his ever expanding collection of works.
