They faultlessly deliver heavy energy without losing the reflection and emotion in their lyrics.

'Palaces' is the debut album from Vermillion Road. The Denver four-piece bring a collection of solid, well-produced tracks, mixing heavy guitar sounds with more Alternative melodic vocals for a fresh-faced Alternative Rock album.
At first the tone of the vocals strike you as unfitting but give Will Robison a chance and he'll show you why his soaring, clear-cut voice works on the emotional choruses in 'Tread On Me' and 'These Lies'. On the ballad 'Palaces' he is especially commanding.

The pace is generally quite laid-back, even on the heavier tracks. The songs are a little safe, especially the in the first half, and you can be forgiven for thinking they sound very similar. The bridges mix softer passages well amidst the heavy rhythm section. It's good to hear Hunter Heurich switching up the guitar sound for the solo on 'Palaces'; it plays with the pace too, which can sometimes feel a bit dragging in the first half of the album.

The second half of the album is where VR hit their stride. 'No Crying Allowed' has more edge and drive, dancing out of the lines that it sometimes feels the tight production has drawn around the album's sound. It can, in places, sound a bit too clean and almost immature in its tone. But the racy vocal licks and bass fills add frills in all the right places to create one of the more exciting tracks on the album.

'N.H.B.' mixes a Grungy, strutting verse with a brighter chorus and plenty of major notes slung in there. 'All The Same' keeps throwing the rhythmic punches and features a couple of fantastic melodic hooks too. 'Make My Day' bounces from an infectious, building verse to a chorus thumping with backing vocals that you want to jump around to.

It's an album that, unusually, is far better in the second half. There's a good deal of power but also a feeling of being a very youthful Rock album. What Vermillion Road does best is faultlessly deliver heavy energy without losing the reflection and emotion in their lyrics.
