Overall there are signs of some promise in this first release from the new line-up.

Last Joker, originally a Brazilian band formed in 1990, released their eponymous first album in 1993. After the band broke up in 1995, guitarist Miguel Mega moved to L.A., studied the guitar and the music business and after releasing ten instrumental albums has now moved to the U.K. and reformed the band with four new members; Yves Martin (guitar) Roddy B (vocals), Al Pringles (bass) and Adam Proud (drums) making up the reformed group.

It was not surprising to learn that the lead guitarist was behind the formation of this band as the guitar is the saving grace of this album, the playing being original, lyrical and really top notch. The guitar on 'Kissed By the Lake', ''Surrender For Love', 'Don't Close Your Eyes' and 'Confidence' containing some great work, for example. However this album is like the girl with the curl; when it's good it's very, very good but when it's bad it's horrid.

Opener 'Are You Ready' is standard Rock fare, with some nice spot on vocals asking if we are ready to Rock? It's a fairly good song if lyrically in well-trammelled territory. The lyrics to '...Lake' are much more original and the vocals just adequate to carry what is probably a great song. However, the vocals are detuned to a level beyond most people's tolerance on a number of tracks and so unfortunately the quality of the album vocals wise is not uniform. Examples which could be improved upon include 'God Save the Heroes' and 'Sweet Sensations'.

Overall there are signs of some promise in this first release from the new line-up...however, they probably need to work on being consistently good overall. In these days when people are starting to buy songs, not albums and with so many good bands around, it is becoming more important that every song earns its place on an album.
