This is the sound of the band celebrating their return from the Prog wilderness.

This is the first ever release of the audio from the 1997 'Live At Montreux' show, this double disc offering also includes sleeve notes from both Keith Emerson and Greg Lake on their relationship with the city of Montreux and what it meant to Emerson Lake And Palmer.

Opening with one of the most well-known ELP songs 'Karn Evil 9-1st Impression Part 2', the sound is crisp, although Lakes vocals sound a little dry and could have done with a little reverb I think. Carl Palmer's power house drumming drives so much of the music, his percussion dynamics remind us why he is still regarded as one of the best stickmen in the business.

Some songs like 'Tiger In A Spotlight' sound a little too standard Rock 'n' Roll by ELP standards and to these ears seem out of place among the more intricate musical compositions.

'Touch And Go' from the underappreciated Emerson Lake & Powell album, is a Melodic Rock masterpiece and a welcome addition to the set-list, it really stands head and shoulders above some of the bands more self-indulgent songs like 'Honky Tonk Train Blues'.

I always enjoyed the more subtle melodies contained in songs such as 'From The Beginning' and 'Lucky Man', Lake's silky vocals and acoustic guitar work really shine here.

Bleeding one song into another, 'Tarkus/Pictures At An Exhibition' takes on a whole new shape in the live environment. Lake did deputise for John Wetton in Asia and you can hear the similarities in his voice on these songs. Special mention should go to Emerson who really plays some terrific Jazz Rock keyboards, and it is refreshing to hear a more laid back approach to his playing.

The final track is a monster melody of 'Fanfare For A Common Man/Carmina Burana/Drum Solo/Rondo/Toccata And Fugue In D Minor'. All three musicians get a chance to deliver their own stand alone moments to great effect.

This is the sound of the band celebrating their return from the Prog wilderness.
