This is Blues in an assortment of flavours, some delicious rum and raisin, some plain vanilla.

In numerology it resounds with practicality. It's disliked in Chinese culture as it is pronounced Si, as is Death. It also is the number of the elements and there are the "Horsemen". There are also this many items for £6.99 in my local pound shop (some sales issues here I feel). Yes, four has a storied career and carries with it power and mythical provenance. It's also the number of members in David Sinclair's band, although he's been a threesome before too, swapping players like top football clubs; nevertheless, they've released three other albums and kept kicking on.

This is Blues in an assortment of flavours, some delicious rum and raisin, some plain vanilla. There is even some Pub Rock, with 'Sick Of Being Good' New Wave enough to bring Graham Parker to mind but almost lumpen enough to also remind us of Brinsley Schwartz, but Sinclair's arch lyrics and delivery raising it beyond lumpen.

When they swing the Blues as on 'The Click-Clack Man', the Jazzy Tangent feel makes us want more, as does the smouldering Florian Hofer wannabe 'The Illness & The Cure' and the squelchy backing in 'Crude Emotion' (not to mention the attempt to Funk Rock the chorus)... these all need plaudits. When they old-school it though, not so successful; as on the harp-led 'World Turns Around' with a standard Blues aching solo, or when they try Reggae (please no...) on 'Down By The Canal'.

Some of this is just not exciting, special or standout enough. Sinclair's laconic drawl is fun to hear and his expressive, chatty lyrics add quality but we have heard this stuff before. Perhaps diehard fans will lap it up, but others have plenty more out there to lap at. Four in the band with four albums recorded but not at the forefront of the Blues or Rock.
