A hotchpotch of musical ideas, where Spearfish don't really seem to know whether they are a Prog or Hard Rock band.

Sweden's Spearfish are back with their fourth album 'In The Meantime...' but just like their first three albums, I have a problem with just who this band want to be. The problem for me is that their sound has a confused air, one that leaves you perplexed after listening to it.

In Thomas Thulin they have a vocalist who (at times) sounds not a million miles away from the great Geddy Lee and because of this, the band also (at times) seem to want to ape their obvious musical heroes Rush. Sadly, these Rush-isms aren't found in all of the band's songs and what we get instead is a hotchpotch of musical ideas, where Spearfish don't really seem to know whether they are a Prog or Hard Rock band. And this all makes listening to '...Meantime...' a bit of a disjointed affair.

Now don't get me wrong, Spearfish can certainly write and play good Rock music and in guitarist Peter Lundin they have a star, it's just the fact that from one moment to the next you're not sure whether you're going to hear Rush-like clone songs, such as 'Quicksilver Linings', 'Inspiration' and 'Time Will Come', or melodic Rockers like 'South' or 'Gazing At The Moon'. Then to confuse matters even more, Spearfish throw in a cover of Rush's 'New World Man', which just leaves you scratching your head as to what they are trying to achieve.

Personally I'd have preferred either an entire album of songs that sound a bit "Rushie" or one that is full of Melodic Rock ditties but not a mixture of the two because for me it just doesn't work.

But as I always say, please give the band a listen and make up your own minds as it could just be my cloth ears preventing me from liking this album more that I do.
