'Voice Of Reason' has come up on the blind side to stake a claim as one of the best Melodic Metal albums of the year.

Formed in Sweden in 2001, Cloudscape have steadily built up a reputation as one of the leading purveyors of Melodic Metal and their fifth studio release 'Voice Of Reason', their first since 2012's 'New Era', sees the band consolidating and strengthening their position.
With only lead singer Michael Andersson and guitarist Patrik Svard remaining from their self-titled debut, the line-up changes have enabled the band to build on their initial promise and take things to the next level.

'A New Design' kicks things off in promising fashion with a swirl of synths and some brutal riffing with Andersson spitting out particularly venomous vocals in the verse before a huge, huge melodic chorus stands proud. This sums them up; very heavy but very melodic – hard enough for fans of Metal but melodic enough for those of a fluffier inclination.

'Futuristic Psycho' proves that the opener was no fluke being equally as hard-hitting and gloriously melodic with Andersson's vocals dominating to devastating effect. If Ritchie Blackmore had not discovered Ronnie Romero, then Andersson could have been a serious contender for the coveted spot in Rainbow's fleeting return next year.

'Don't Close Your Eyes' blends prime-time Harem Scarem with the heavier side of Talisman and that's a lethal cocktail to take in one dose, not to mention the Judas Priest riffage of 'All For Metal' which raises its fist to the glories of Metal and does exactly what it says on the tin. Just listen to that wonderfully gonzoid chorus, after a couple of spins you'll be singing it for a week.

As well as the punchy Rockers, '...Reason' features two epics. The title track clocks in at over eleven minutes heading into a more Progressive territory without losing its sense of atmosphere and melody. Album closer, 'In Silence We Scream', is even better with its acoustic Led Zeppelin-influenced opening which builds up and up into a soaring dramatic climax with Andersson again showing real class.

It's appeared late in the year but '...Reason' has come up on the blind side to stake a claim as one of the best Melodic Metal albums of the year. If you haven't crossed paths with Cloudscape before, then 'Voice Of Reason' is a good place to start.
