A perfect musical wild card.

Being such a devoted follower of Helloween and just about anything each of its members gets up to, I was willing to give Kickhunter (run by pumpkin bassist Markus Grosskopf) a fair listen, despite playing a style I care little for. Far from the melodic speed of his main unit, Kickhunter play a melodic brand of classic rock and pop with many influences and styles cropping up on their third album, the multifaceted ‘All In’, which, as far as I know, has received a lot of good press.

What I like about this album is its fearless attitude; the band run through a set of wide-ranging rockers, taking a pinch from every genre and mixing it up to create a fun and assorted listening experience. Bluesy hard rock, soft country, 80s hair metal, and even some 70s prog can be heard here, drifting through the songs like a fog of sound. The performances are stellar, without a moment wasted, and with a huge line up (featuring guest slots from Herman Frank, Jan S. Eckert, and Axel Mackenrott), there’s a high degree of musical ability that sells this material from the first note.

Highlights come and go, though the standout tracks are obvious from the moment they begin; the fiery ‘Revolution’ (complete with double kick drums and Hammond organ), ‘Checks In The Mail’ (which tenders the sharpest hook), and the heavy ‘Another Tear’ all blast from the speakers with an astute assurance, showing just how mottled Kickhunter’s sound can be. And with a production by the busiest man in the business, all round top knob-twiddler Dennis Ward, ‘All In’ has a great sound, one that caters for everything that goes on within it.

A strange, speckled release from a band I’m sure will make many more records before they disband, ‘All In’ is a perfect musical wild card.
