A perfect companion when the mood requires a gentle and comforting aural experience.

There is nothing more frightening than removing all facades and exposing your emotions at their most visceral. Unlike almost every other form of art where the creator's visibility is minimized, musicians have a unique opportunity to both compose and perform their own material.

For guitarist Lars Eric Mattsson, 'Songs From A Different Room' is his attempt at hiding behind nothing, delivering an all-acoustic affair where he both plays and (for the first time) assumes the role of lead vocalist.

An album that has been seven years in the making, he was first featured in Mike Varney's Spotlight column (Guitar Player Magazine) back in 1985 where many future shredders also gained first exposure. Completely shying away from amplification of any kind, the orchestration for '...Room' is minimalistic to a point where most songs consist of nothing more than guitar, voice and one or two percussion items.

Mattsson's guitar prowess is featured throughout in the form of smooth, liquid runs and incendiary arpeggios. His voice, which possesses a weathered and hoarse yet soft quality that is reminiscent of Dean Castronovo (Journey, Revolution Saints), magnifies the bucolic nature of the music.

Many a song also paraphrase melodies from music found around the world; these include 'Sweet Taste Of Mystery' (India), 'Shadow Of Doubt' (Eastern Asia), and 'Keep Pushing Me On' (Spanish/Latin). Fret-board excursions aside, the music is really nothing more than a vehicle for the introspective lyrics.

With the exception of an abrupt and premature fade out on 'Keep On Burning', the production is well balanced with great clarity and affords each instrument wonderful placement in the mix. After repeated "spins," discovering the nuances of 'Songs From A Different Room' made it a really satisfying listen and stands to be a perfect companion when the mood requires a gentle and comforting aural experience.
