Put simply, this is just brilliant!

Whilst hard rock and heavy metal (or indeed any post rock ‘n’ roll genre of popular music for that matter) has always traditionally been seen as the preserve of the predominantly Christian west, there are signs that it’s now starting to flourish in other parts of the world. The markets in both Japan and South East Asia of course have long been fiercely passionate about the scene, the former even enjoying limited international success in the 80’s with bands such as Vow Wow and Loudness, but now there are clear indicators that the message is beginning to spread even beyond those borders.

Earlier in the year I was introduced to the phenomenal Edgend, a tantalising new progressive/power metal band hailing from the homeland of Judaism (Israel), a real leap of faith if ever there was one, but now the Muslim world have gone one further with Myrath ... if like me you thought Edgend were good, believe me, this lot will absolutely blow your mind!

Putting aside all the old tribal differences and religious intolerances that sadly still blight the world right now, on a purely esoteric level when two distinct cultures come together as equals, the results can often be a cathartic experience for all those who care to get involved ... and so it proves with Myrath. Hailing from Tunisia (home to Carthage, one of the most cultured and important cities of the Ancient World), this five piece are, as far as I can recall, one of but a handful from any Islamic state to gain any sort of exposure to a western audience. However, having so deftly brought together the thrilling progressive ethos of the mighty Dream Theater and Symphony X with a haunting Arabian undercurrent from their own world, Myrath are by far the most accomplished I’ve ever heard!

Bursting into vivid vibrant life right from the off, incendiary opener ‘Forever And A Day’ sets the scene for one of the most spectacular and enlightening rollercoaster rides you’ll have witnessed in years. As I said earlier, far from reinforcing the cultural dichotomy espoused by today’s heads of state, Myrath show how two apparently diametrically opposed mindsets can work in unison to produce something truly amazing.

Filled with tumultuous light and shade, deftly interwoven guitar/keyboard interplay, soaring vocal harmonies (by anyone’s standards, front man Zaher Zorgati is a huge talent), and (perhaps most importantly) shimmering melodies, ‘Desert Call’ (which I believe is actually their third album by the way) is nothing short of a minor league masterpiece! The sound (courtesy of Kevin Codfert) is absolutely huge, dynamic mood swings further accentuating what are already great songs in ‘Empty World’, ‘Silent Cries’, ‘Ironic Destiny’, ‘No Turning Back’ and ‘Desert Call’.

I’m not often blown away by new releases these days, but put simply, this is just brilliant!
