Certainly an interesting listen overall.

Jameson Raid are a band with both an historic name and a history. The name comes from a daring raid in the Transvaal way back in the late nineteenth century. The band's own history goes back to Birmingham in 1975 and a subsequent assault on the music scene as part of the cluster of bands that emerged as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal a few years later. They will be known to some from their 1979 EP 'Seven Days Of Splendour' and to others for the warmly received festival appearances since their reunion in 2010.

Astonishingly, despite the appearance of three vinyl sets, a full retro CD and a three track album teaser, 'Uninvited Guests' is Jameson Raid's first ever full album of new songs. With vocalist Terry Dark still at the helm, and early eighties bassist Pete Green in tow, they are back, apparently, "to finish what they started."

"We have influenced many and been influenced by the best" say the band, and indeed, one of the most notable features of the album is the rolling, two-way interplay evident throughout – with the smoother production and Sleaze Rock edge (you might spot hints of Skid Row or Guns 'N' Roses) modifying the guts and passion of the NWOBHM-era Metal that's still at the heart of everything here.

Opener, and new single, 'Mr Sunset' is a well-constructed track predicated on a gutsy riff and a slick lick, and it's immediately obvious that we are dealing with musicians who know both their craft and their audience. 'Metal People' reaches out explicitly to that audience, scoring big on smile-cracking, communal sentiment and hitting these ears like it's been written for live performance.

Elsewhere, the slightly spooky 'Breaking Point' drags a Black Sabbath-esque riff through Symphonic Rock drama, while 'Red Moon' lurches in all power ballad-like before revealing its Gothic Rock hand. Also strong are the pace shifting 'Haunted' and the intriguing '9 Reasons' ("9 reasons to go to war... 9 reasons to die") with its blend of marching Indie riff and blazing Iron Maiden-esque guitar.

It's not all plain sailing. While it has much going for it, 'Uninvited Guests' does occasionally dip below its own standards and settle for tracks that do little more than tick all the boxes. Overall however, it is a very competently written and performed album, and it is wonderful to see another NWOBHM band reminding people of the past and looking to reclaim their place in Rock history.

The years appear to have been kind to Dark's voice, and the heavy but melodic guitar work, underpinned by often dark or dramatic bass lines, is (at times) a joy. It's certainly an interesting listen overall.
