Tigertailz / Last Great Dreamers - Underworld, London (UK) - 15 April 2016

With a singer looking like Marc Bolan (complete in seventies suit and 'Clockwork Orange' bowler), plenty of lurex scarves and waistcoats, Last Great Dreamers are delightfully retro. Think Dog's D'Amour crossed with Slade and The Clash and you're getting there. Energetic and thrusting their guitars, they have come to take no prisoners in London; although they seem to have brought quite a few fans with them. With no focus on guitar solos and despite spinning drum sticks the emphasis seems on songs rather than individual musicianship, suggesting the band are more chart-focussed than the average Rock band and this would go along with the Glam Pop heritage. Determined to have a good time, they are an entertaining support if somewhat musically different from the main act. Slightly surprising choice for a support for Tigertailz, but they managed to warm up the crowd nicely.

With new singer Rob Wylde, bassist Berty Burton and drummer Matthew Blakout, Jay Pepper is the only original member of this version of Tigertailz after over ten line-up changes. Of course, we miss past band members Ace; dearly departed Pepsi; Steevi; Kim. All of them charismatic and colourful in their own way, but this being the only current touring version of the band, it's only fair to assess them on their own merits. Do people want to see Tigertailz songs performed by people not in the original band? Well, there's every indication tonight that they do! The gig is well attended by enthusiastic fans and the new band get a warm reception.

With Wylde at the helm they certainly look the part, in fact he looks very like Ace in the old days. The crowd look thrilled to see a band unashamedly Glam when today some bands treat it like it's a dirty word and the crowd embrace a night of fun and good time Rock 'n' Roll for its own sake. Pepper makes friends with the girls by remarking how the girls from the old days have just got hotter, but the men maybe not so much, lol – much in line with the band's well-known cheeky style. The sound isn't brilliant right the way through, but it seems to settle down and it's there when it matters. The ballad 'Heaven' in particular shows that Wylde can sing and fill the shoes of his predecessors, not only with image but also with a good voice. 'Living Without you' is another high point, with a great solo from Pepper. 'Call Of The Wild' builds on this and keeps the crowd energy up. 'Shoot To Kill' is a great choice for a first encore; fast and relentless it translates really well across time and line-up members. Final song is, of course, 'Love Bomb Baby' and sounding great the band end on a high note. No this is not Pepsi, Ace, Steevi, Kim – that would be impossible! But if you can get over that and want a good night out and to hear some great Glam songs from a band not afraid of its heritage this is the gig for you!
