With the aid of a full orchestra it gives this unique genre a different depth of sound.

Melted Space is the brainchild of French composer and multi-instrumentalist Pierre Le Pape; a new name on the scene to myself. What Le Pape has created here is a Symphonic Power Metal Opera that is based loosely on a classic faerie tale; involving characters such as 'Titiana', 'Loki' and 'Apollo'.

Le Pape has taken inspiration from such luminaries as Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) and Tobias Sammet (Avantasia) and added his own personal touch. As ever with these projects, Le Pape has roped in an all-star cast including Clementine Delauney (Visions Of Atlantis/ex-Serenity), Aylin Gimenez Garcia (Sirenia), David Vincent (Morbid Angel, Terrorizer) and Mikael Stanne (Dark Tranquillity, HammerFall) as well as the aforementioned Lucassen. The final piece of the jigsaw is the utilisation of the City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

As with many of these Rock/Metal Operas, the tempo of the music is dictated by the storyline; whilst the storytelling is key, this sometimes upsets the rhythm and flow of the album. The use of multiple vocalists (or characters) does help to bind the songs into the storyline and give the characters some warmth. Although I must admit to not being a fan of growling vocals, in this instance, it does actually add to the storytelling.

The use of the full orchestra is a masterstroke and adds great depth to the sound. 'No Need To Fear' and 'Called By The Queen' are the best examples of this crammed full of harmonious melodies, yet allowing you to feel the power of the heavier elements of the song. On the flip side the use of the multi-instruments; rather than keyboards, makes the slower songs more soothing and, in a strange way, allows the storytelling to come to the forefront... the best example being 'Trust & Betrayal'. As I said before, the album jumps in style in drastic ways which keeps the listener on his toes, being both light and dark playing to whichever vocalist's strong points.

'The Great Lie' is a well-produced, well written Rock/Metal Opera, but a lot heavier than Avantasia or Ayreon. What it does is nothing new but with the aid of a full orchestra it gives this unique genre a different depth of sound. The performances of the characters add to this depth and Delauney's beautiful vocal is the standout for me.

That all said, is it the best in its field? If I said yes, would that be the great lie!
