Something is just not quite connecting between each of the band members on this album.

Doomsday Outlaw are a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band from Derbyshire who formed in 2013 and have just released their debut 'Black River'. Introducing the album is the title track where first impressions are a concoction of Black Label Society with Black Stone Cherry, if only it "tasted just as good as it sounds".

For a start, the guitars are so loud it sounds like they are over compensating and drowning out the rest of the recorded elements. With 'Down', DO have tried to be extra raw and dirty but the song is far too distorted and a lot is missing due to the production not mixed to the best levels. Lyrically, there are no real hooks to draw you in and engage with the track.

'Judgement Day' has a similar feel to 'Down', the melody is a bit tedious and by the time the solo has come in, you have become disinterested which is a shame as the solo is something the track has going for it. 'New Salvation' is a predictable song in that it arrives with a slower entrance and builds to some climax; the solo is actually a great feature and maybe near the point when the track should started to come to an end instead of going on for another two minutes longer than, in my opinion, it should have.

The album showcases some excellent playing from guitarists Steve and Gavin; however there is a lot of reciting than actually playing. The limitation comes in their ability to song-write which I feel 'Bed Of Lies' is an example of.

The overall aim that seems to be for the album is to be powerful, raw and high volume but instead what has happen is it is overly distorted which makes their music sound like it lacks fullness. There is a missing back-beat and snare which would really give their music drive and rhythm and is something that would have enhanced the album.

It is not easy to pinpoint the main drawback but possibly it could be down to a lack of chemistry; that is what it feels like is missing, something is just not quite connecting between each of the band members on this album. Maybe this is something that experience and time together can help erase as Doomsday Outlaw gig and work towards their next album.
