Warrior Soul were incandescently brilliant tonight

Playing to a packed crowd, Kory Clark was focused and sharp tonight – NO messing around – as Warrior Soul produced a monster sound in the limited space of The Barfly. Ever youthful with his mop of tousled blonde hair, Clarke fitted well with his young band, arguably it couldn't be any other way. While his intelligence will cut you like a knife, he is an eternal teen and just what you need to shake things up at the start of a Rockin' weekend in Camden Town.

The band exploded onto the stage in a ball of furious energy, ideally suited to 'Punk And Belligerent' which made an early appearance. This was closely followed by 'Jump For Joy' (an excellent song Clark does not usually play) with its killer chorus, as well as being sarcastic and just as pertinent as it always was; its presence is well-deserved in the set and we hope it stays. Clark got down on his knees with a passion; he has always been no compromise, it's all or nothing. The crowd knew this and they bought in and fed that energy straight back to him. 'Wasteland', with its freedom-fighting rebel spirit, is exactly what the crowd wanted to hear on a Friday night and there was a magical interaction that began to happen between the mercurial front-man and his crowd; "'his" because by this early in the set he already owned them. With the little boy gesture of pulling up his pants, Clark disarmed the crowd, but with his lethal sexuality the crowd at the front are transfixed, sensing this Clark grabbed his crotch, although in his hands the gesture is anarchical and powerful, not perverse. Throwing his mike from hand to hand, he roared and met every expectation of the crowd.

Despite the strong Punk elements, in a blistering guitar intro to 'Love Is (The Drug)' and an undisputedly excellent solo from a leopard-shirted guitarist in 'Payback Is A Bitch', the band's Metal credentials and crossover heritage shone through; have no doubt, this was Rock 'n' Roll with a fist. The crowd reaction was enormous and for a moment The Barfly sounded like a stadium. Clark looked genuinely emotional at the intensity. One crowd member kept shouting "You've still got it"... give that man a prize for stating the wonderfully obvious.

On a roll and pumping high in the air in victory, Clark retired before returning for the enthusiastic encore calls. Only then did he allow himself a well-deserved beer. Clark initially told the crowd that it was great to be back in England, and then joked he only comes for the weather. By this point it was clear he also came for the faithful British fans. With palpable sincerity, he told them they have been a great audience and after he kept the pace up with 'Fuck The Pigs' he finally acquiesced to the persistent shout for 'Losers'. With the passionate chorus and beautiful Blues guitar, it was one of the best versions we have heard.

Although a comparatively short set, WS provided value for money and the crowd were more than satisfied – in fact they were set on fire. Warrior Soul were incandescently brilliant tonight. As relevant as they always were, they provided intelligent Metal for those who are not mainstream, but are certainly not unthinking; searing passion and intellect, such qualities have always been prized in England. No surprise then than Clark caned it tonight!
