After living with the album for a few days I have no hesitation in admitting I'm hooked.

Aside from Pretty Maids (naturally) I can't think of too many high profile acts that originate from Denmark. Copenhagen's Forever Still currently don't have a high profile but hopefully that will change when this debut full-length album sees the light of day. Vocalist Maja Schønning and bass player Mikkel Haastrup are the heart and soul of the band with the line-up being completed by guitarist Dennis Post and drummer Brion Wekin.

'Tied Down' is essentially three EPs brought together as one set of songs that deals with a glut of personal issues stemming from depression, anxiety and worthlessness, through to perseverance and recovery. Everything was written by Haastrup and Schønning and it is a well-crafted selection of Hard Rock songs enhanced by a Gothic edge.

The obvious reference point would be Evanescence's more recent output ('Once Upon A Nightmare' and 'Alone' being the best examples) but throw in Lacuna Coil's dramatic sense of power and Avril Lavigne's quirky Pop nuances and FS's style is defined. An ethereal undercurrent permeates throughout the album, even during the more aggressive and up-tempo numbers, such as energetic opener 'Scars', the full-on 'Awake The Fire' and brooding 'Breathe In' (which features several guttural screams from Schønning that hint at something more menacing).

The lilting subtleties of 'Save Me' are a nice contrast and highlight an inspiring writing ethic whilst also acting as a showcase for some quality musicianship. Schønning's vocals are very impressive and her delivery has the ability to imbue feelings of both melancholy and happiness that perfectly match the creative and varied structures and arrangements.

The programmed elements embellish the sound nicely without detracting from the guitar, bass and drums that are at the musical core. I have to admit that following the first couple of plays the impact levels were minimal, but after living with the album for a few days I have no hesitation in admitting I'm hooked. The running order is well balanced and the production values (courtesy of Haastrup) are very high for an independent release. There are no lengthy workouts and the commercial essence of the ten tracks resonates long after the last one finishes.

Apparently Forever Still headlined their first run of UK dates during 2015, a tour I'm disappointed I missed out on. I can say for certain that when the next tour comes along, I'll be somewhere in the crowd for at least one of the shows.
