A cool little disc with strong songs and a good band performance.

This is a great Rock 'n' Roll record that harks back to the seventies. It sounds like it was made by those pencil skinny Rock stars of that era in their drainpipe trousers and forty-a-day smoking habits. However, it is not. These guys remember the seventies first time round. It captures the snotty, pouting spirit of The New York Dolls or a cheerier version of The Ramones, adds Bluesy licks and some ace bubble-gum hooks and presents you with a rather addictive little disc.

A clear, uncluttered production makes it easy to engage with each instrument, which are all there to service the songs. 'Shake That Thing' makes you do just that and the nostalgic 'Good Ole Days', with its evocative lyrics, will transport you to seventies New York. 'Desolate Row' has the defiant attitude of The Clash and 'Skin To Bone' is just a damn good Pop Rock song with a smoking, Bluesy solo.

Mid-album sees two of the best tracks in 'Noreese', a catchy ditty about a woman you'll want to avoid, and 'Come On, Come On' which was written by Gar Francis of The Doughboys, who also plays guitar, mellotron sax and adds the wonderfully distinctive organ hook which takes you back to sixties Garage Rock. It is what you call a good old fashioned hit single.

It stays strong to the end with 'Can't Remember A Thing' which sounds like Dion being a bad boy, the Power Pop of 'Perfume Girl' (written by The Grip Weeds' Dave DeSantis) and the band wigging out on the strutting, NYD-like 'Gotta Get Away From Jane'; this track will have you making moves like Mick Jagger.

'Desolate Row' is a cool little disc with strong songs and a good band performance; in particular Bruce Ferguson's vocals that give the band an authentic sounding retro character and the twin guitars which are lean and mean with no extraneous fat. Ferguson has said of this album that "Rock 'n' Roll needs to get back to its roots"; mission accomplished.
