Most of the tracks sound like demo versions recorded on a lousy home cassette recorder thirty years ago.

Trancemission (technically, a sequel to eighties German Heavy Metal band Trance) are no newbie to the music scene, although their self-proclaimed status of a worldwide legend might be a bit exaggerated... Now this four-piece returns with yet another effort entitled 'Paranoia' and embroidered with a camp-yet-stylish cover artwork, it seems very promising to be given a spin at first.

First few seconds into the album – through the spoken opener entitled 'Der Hölle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen' – you may start to wonder if it's really the German Heavy Metal band you're listening to... or perhaps... is it an entirely different album put in your jewel case by mistake? Then comes 'Queen Of The Night' with its references to Mozart, a supposed lovechild of Accept-esque Metal and Classical Music which has taken nothing after its assumed parents. An uninspired and simply weird track overall, it could have been understood as a pastiche of sorts. Otherwise, it could be classed as an example of a simply testimony that Classical and Rock/Metal music don't always blend well. 'Killer', with its gritty, slightly Bluesy riff and Udo Dirkschneider-esque vocals (as well as suggestive female moans), is much better.

So what else can we find here? More or less, a collection of songs which seem to use the best Cock Rock rhymes as well as Accept-esque gimmicks but somehow lack the famous Teutonic powerhouse sound. Obviously there are some interesting moments throughout the album – the stronger and more distinctive, 'Hey There Gipsies' could be a highlight, alongside the Folksy, acoustic 'Lone Wolf' or the feisty piece 'Legal Highs'. Overall, though, these are songs hardly warranting immortality.

The band's sound – which should have been meaty and tight – is, for the lack of a better word, flat. And while there's nothing bad about the structures of the particular pieces, most of the tracks sound like demo versions recorded on a lousy home cassette recorder thirty years ago and undeveloped ever since. Perhaps with better production, some serious re-working in terms of lyrics and more powerful vocals, Trancemission would or could have returned in all its glory – but for some strange reason, it hasn't.

Germany's delivered some of the best Rock and Metal acts ever – from Accept and Running Wild to Scorpions and Bonfire, to name just a few and skip the long list of Power Metal notables. But it's not accidental the Rock scribes' pet term "Teutonic Metal" is usually associated with power, heaviness, strong melodies and certain dose of grandiosity. Here we have an album that has none of those things and although some potential is still there, it has to be reported with sadness that in the case of Trancemission, the mission has failed.
