Women In Rock - Talking Heads, Southampton (UK) - 19 August 2016

Then there were three, but in this case, unlike with Genesis, for Women In Rock it was an increase in band members. Adding to the already outstanding vocal talents of Helen Hurd and Sara Louise on this evening (and for selected other dates) was Space Elevator's The Duchess. As an aside, if you have not heard Space Elevator then I urge you to do so; you will not be disappointed!

With the stage lit by a purple glow the band arrives on stage - Mick Neaves on drums, Steve Clay on bass, Jamie Brooks on keys, and Barry Fitzgibbon on guitar. The intro to Suzi Quattro's 'Can The Can' kicks in and Hurd takes centre stage, resplendent in her black leather basque, shorts, and thigh high boots. With her long blonde hair flowing she launches into the vocals and proves that this band isn't just about looking like Rock chicks, they sound amazing too!

Next up is Louise, again decked out in leather, but this time in a black dress accented with chrome spikes and boots. She delivers a powerful rendition of Joan Jett's 'I Love Rock 'N' Roll' to the appreciative crowd. No sooner had that song finished and we were off again as The Duchess took the lead role for Patti Smith's 'Because The Night'. Her look was not only visually stunning but also the most dangerous looking with her short, cropped black leather basque covered in chrome spikes! Tight-fitting black leggings with lace panels and boots completed the outfit.

The tempting trio continued switching roles between backing and lead roles, powering through Pat Benatar's 'Hit Me With Your Best Shot', Stevie Nicks' 'Edge of 17', 'Alone' by Heart, and Blondie's 'Atomic' before The Duchess hit a double whammy with a soulful 'Black Velvet' by Alannah Myles and a full throttle delivery of Vixen's 'Edge Of A Broken Heart'. Finishing the first half of the show, Hurd performed 'I Found Someone' before a short break and costume changes ensued.

The dazzling girls returned to the stage, still leather clad, but with The Duchess and Louise both in shiny black skirts and basque tops and Hurd rocking a black shiny one-piece cat suit.

The second half covered all eras of female vocal hits from Joan Jett through to Evanescence, Alanis Morrisette, and even Skunk Anasie, each perfectly delivered and performed brilliantly by the musicians too, all faithfully representative to the original tracks. To end the evening, having proved they can cover any female singer on the planet, the girls raised the bar and proved they can handle ANY song by going out with AC/DC's 'You Shook Me All Night Long'.

Tribute bands aren't always to everyone's taste, especially if the music isn't accurate but I can't underline enough that Women In Rock is much more than a tribute band; all members are top class musicians and deliver music that they are passionate about. Add to that a great visual experience replete with leather, lace, looks, and lots of hair flying and you have a magical combination. Some songs in the set-list will never be performed by the original artists again and this is as close you'll get to hearing them live and accurately performed. Here's to see a lot more of these guys & gals!
