Albums as wonderful as this one from new British bands do not come along every day.

Winter In Eden is a terrific new symphonic metal quintet with a female vocalist emanating from Finland….ah! no, sorry, that should read north-east England! (It just seems that all the good new bands of this ilk are coming out of Finland, so what a delight it is to be able to introduce a British band that seems to be ready-honed to compete with the best in their chosen genre).

I still remember initially giving this a quick audition in the company of our esteemed editor and his comment “they will be positively dangerous if they could write a decent chorus” continues to flay me after giving the album more than half a dozen listens – because this CD is absolutely dripping with warm, gorgeous melodies, stunning arrangements and a quintessential flair. Vicky Johnson is the vocalist and she has a distinctive, sultry, non-operatic voice that keeps reminding me of Cher! (Listen in particular to ‘Cry’ and ‘Alighieri’ and try to tell me I’m wrong!) Guitarist Sam Cull and keyboardist Steve Johnson provide a significant and compelling symphonic sheen to the songs while the rhythm guys (Ian Heddle – bass, Wayne McAloon – drums) are well up in the mix and provide a very solid foundation throughout.

Lyrically, the fare on ‘Awakening’ focuses upon the underside of human existence but musically the songs take us through the gamut of emotions, and the one instrumental track here (‘Windelfell’) is a joyous up-tempo number to which you can imagine cavorting around a camp fire! (Seriously!) Overall we are very definitely in classic melodic goth/symphonic femme metal territory and if you are normally attracted by this sort of stuff then it comes with a gold-plated recommendation from me. I am actually surprised that no label has snapped them up – so at present ‘Awakening’ only seems to be available direct from the band. To help you to make up your minds, go and have a gander at their MySpace music site and listen particularly to ‘Fate Will Oblige’ and the previously mentioned ‘Cry’. However, for me, the absolute highlight is the two-part title track that closed the album, and there is (an admittedly quite rough) video of the band performing this live at the same site.

Albums as wonderful as this one from new British bands do not come along every day. It has been a complete revelation to me. Apparently Winter In Eden “produce and perform music they feel compelled to create”. In which case…more please! (And I’m sure there will be…)
